WELLINGTON.

This day.

A smart shock "of earthquake, accompanied by loud rumbling noise, was felt! here at 2.22 this morning, direction northerly. The shock was also experienced at Carter ton. A young girl named Nellie Wilson, while romping on the wharf last night, fell overboard, and had a narrow escape from being drowned, she was rescued by a seaman from the English barque Waimea. Result of analysis of specimens from Te Aroha, forwarded by post to Murray, M.H.R. :—Mutuk quartz (carries free gold), blende sulphide of zinc, galena sulphide of lead (containing silver), chalcopysite sulphide of copper. The metallic ores form about 6 per cent of the whole ; the sample was too small to permit of a complete analysis being made, but the locality should be prospected, and further samples if sent will be fully reported on by Dr James Hector.
