HOKITIKA.
This day. News has reached town that Ward of the Paringa settlement, whilst crossing the Oamarama creek, four miles south of the Waiho river en route to Hokitika on the 6th was drowned. His horse was found dead on the beach near Waiho river. The saddle was on and a bag containing letters and a*pocket book was hanging to one of the stirrups. Ward's body up to the present time has not been recovered, though parties %re searching the beach and river beds. He leaves a widow and seven children.
The same heavy weather is still prevailing : it is the worst spell that has been experienced for five years. ABHBUBTON.
This day. It is stated that Puraell and J. Ivess will contest one of the Ashburton constituencies at the coming election.
