HOKITIKA.
This day
On Saturday, two miners Darned Eing and Cor'mit, surveying for a water race in the bush, near Station Gully, Waimea, found the remains of a man, and when Constable Hendrick proceeded to the spot there was no flesh on the bones, and the man is supposed to hate expired while on his face. The tops of his boots were stuck in the ground. There was no clothing except a small piece of wollen packet, and nine shillings were found near the spot. The boots have been identified by a shoemaker at Waimea as a pair he made for Moses Moupina. He was about 60 years old, and an Italian by birth, and was reported missing by the police in April 1880, and never heard of since.
It has been blowing a heavy gale of wind for 48 hours, accompanied with heavy showers and lightning.
The District Court yesterday was occupied with the trial of W. K. Gollaud, of Kumara, for indecent assault on a young girl. The Jury retired at 5 p.m., but are not likely to agree. At the hearing of the cases the witnesses' evidence differed a good deal from that taken before the Magistrate at Kumara. Judge Broad said the matter was before him judicially, and he felt bound to say that it was not surprising there were discrepancies, seeing that several witnesses were young girls, whose evidence was taken after midnight. The prisoner might be prejudiced, as the discrepancies would appear under the circumstances of so much importance, but he musf. say he regarded the taking of the evidence of children at such a time as most improper.
