OLD GOLDEN CALF.

Four men are stoping at the JSo. 2 level, and it is from here that the quartz at the battery comes. The reef here is peculiar in its construction, being divided intotwo distinct bodies of stooe by a " horse " of mullock two feet thick. Up to the present time the manager has only worked in the stope half of the reef, which varies in size along the stopes from nine to eighteen iuches. It is a compact body of stone, and though not containing very much mineral, proves payable. Colors of gold are seen occasionally in the stone while breaking done. This is all the work being carried on at present in this mine, but the manager contemplates putting up a rise on the Young American leader near its junction with the one he is working on. This leader is the one worked on at a lower level by Jenkins and party, tributers in the Caledonian mine, and from which they have got such good stove. A drive has been put in on this leader in the Calf ground up to the slide, but it has not been touched in the way of stoping. It is easy of access, and as it has proved payable below, the manager thinks it is quite possible the shot of gold ascends, and he therefore intends to try its value. CURE. In this mine, four men are driving both ways ou the cross.leader. It is about two inches thick, and it will therefore be some time before a crushing is got out, but it is looking well for gold, a good deal of silvery mineral running through it. The country here is very favourable for gold, and small leaders and veins are found in all directions. One end of the drive on the crossleader is being put in more to look for Wo. 4 leader than to work the crosslead. In the other end, a goodlooking leader is showing in the face, running parallel to the one worked with such success by Clarke and party some little time ago. As yet, this one has not been touched, but three or four feet of it will' be broken down shortly to see whether it is worth sending to the mill. Work is also going on on Clarke's leader.

SOUTHERN CROSS. Two men are stopiug on the crossleader; it averages from four to eight inches in thickness, and shows gold occasionally. The manager has knocked off work on the other leader in this drive, and has put the men to sinking the winze at battery level on the specimen leader. The winze is now down about 12 feet from the old drive, or about 45 feet from the battery level. GOLD RETURNS. | Hapi« Ckeek.—Hearn and party have i crushed about 8 loads of quartz this week ! for (lie return of Bozs 14dwts gold. | Southern Cboss.—A crushing of 24 | loads ot stuff at the Alburnia battery ; yielded 31ozs ldwt gold. j Basin (Ie Papa Gully).—Wood and party, proprietors of this claim, have banked 7ozs lOdwts gold.
