Summary of the Week.
The mining industry on the Thames is slowly recovering from the damage done to it by the flood. The water race has been repaired, and the supply of water has ennabled the batteries to resume work, but it will be some time before the roads in some districts—notably the .Karaka and Waiotahi Creeks—are passable, and until that time, a number of small claims will have to suspend operations, it being at present impossible to get the quartz to the mill. Consequent, on the batteries having started crushing, the gold return for the present week shows a marked improvement on that obtaineoVfrom the Thames last week, and we have no doubt but that it will be better still next week. The individual mines are also improving, notably the New North Devon, New Whau, and Caledonian. In the Devon, the ground is now well opened up, and a large supply of quartz available. Crushing is now proceeding and should the quartz at the mill prove remunerative, a prosperous future is apparently before this mine. In the Whau the prospects are even more encouraging, the quartz from the winze at the 160 ft level improving much in appearance, while gold is frequently seen in the stone; The reef at the Sons of Freedom level has not changed, but the class of country continues very favorable and certainly warrants the belief that gold is not very distant. The Upper Country, and especially Waihi, seems to be progressing, and the directors of the Waihi Goldmining Company evidently intend to test their ground thoroughly. The Company has been successfully formed and tenders will be at once oalled for the erection of a battery. The necessary arrangements to secure a supply of water will also be attended to, and we hope soon to see the mine in full swing.
