The Intentions of the Government.

The following telegrams were received last night in reply to those from the Mayor and County Chairman :—

" W. Wilkinson, Mayor, Thames,—l was very sorry to receive the bad news contained in your telegram this morning. The District Engineer is instructed by me to report upon the losses sustained within the Borough.—John Hall."

" The Mayor ot Thames and Chairman, of Thames County Council, —It was with great concern I heard of the flood at the Thames. Mr Shefihan and myself have seen the Minister for Public Works, and their officers will forthwith report what is necessary to be done at once. When his reply is received will again communicate. Inform -Mr McLaren that he may commence to prepare his report.—G. Gbey."

" A. Brodie, County Chairman, Thames, —I much regret to hear the unfortunate news contained in your telegram. I have directed the District Engineer to report on it.—John Hall."

" The Mayor of Thames and Chairman of the County Council, Thames '■ —I deeply regret to hear the news of the severe flood which has caused such a serious loss of life and property. Sir George Grey has already wired you the result of our interview with the Premier. It is important that Mr McLaren's preliminary estimate of damage should come by urgent wire without an hour's delay. Let me know if any subscription is being raised on behalf of private sufferers, and forward particulars.— J. Sheehan."
