Thames Borough Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the ebove Council was held in the Council Chambers, Albert street, last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Osborne, Mennie, McGowan, Marshall, Yeale, Bawden, and Wilson.

The minutes of the previous meeting of the Council and the meetings of the Local Board of Health were read and confirmed, and a precis of the outward correspondence read over.

HOSPITAL COMMITTEE MEETINGS,

Mr Comer, President of the Hospital Committee, asked the Council to allow the Hospital Committee to meet in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evenings.—Resolved that the request be granted.

PETITION

Mr J. M. Robson, of Paeroa, presented a petition praying for telegraphic, comma* nication between the Thames and Ohinemuri, and asking the Council to support it—Resolved that the Mayor sign it on behalf of the Councillors.

VOUCHEE

A Toucher for £2 ss, goldfields' rerenue, was received from the Treasury.

LETTERS BEAD

A letter notifying the Council to remove the water pipes running through an allotment in Mary street was read* from Mr S. Ensor.—Referred to Water Supply Committee, with power to act. A letter from the contractors for the removal of the firebell to Queen street, applying for extra remuneration, was referred to the Works Committee.

Alexander Hanlep, who wrote on behalf of eight other residents, requested the Council to make a few steps at a dangerous part of Upper Albert street. He stated the cost would be trifling, and (it would confer a great boon on the residents. —Referred to Works Committee, with power to act. A complaint was read from E. A. Heald complaining that he had not been able to get any water from his supply pipe for the last ten days, and asking the Council to rectify the defective pipe.— This matter was dealt with in the Turncock's report. J. H. Smith wrote calling the attention of the Council to the bad state of the, footpath in Queen street,;^between Mary and Sealey street, and also directing attention to the footpath in Sealey street north.—Referred to Works Committee nith power to act. ; Thomas Green wrote re the>tate of the. road in Mackay street, between Richmond and Willoughby streets. —Referred to Works Committee.

A letter was read from G. S. Cooper, undersecretary, asking for a return of amounts paid by^ocal. bodies during 1880 for valuing property and making up^the valuation rolls in their respective districts. —Agreed that request be complied with. Mr Carpenter, Chairman of the Parawai Highway Board, wrote forwarding an account for" £2, contribution towards repairs of approach-to the Hape Creek on the continuation of tyolleston street; and also asking the Council to pay the contribution of £10 towards the reservoir road promised by the Domestic Water Supply Committee. —Cr Mennie moved that the £10 asked for be paid.—Cr Odborne seconded, aod it was carried. —The other matter was referred to the Water Supply Committee with power to act. A request for permission to plant two poplars on the Tajrarn Road was refused on account of the narrowness of the road.;

A letter was received from Drs Calian, Huxtable, and Payne in reply to one from the Council, asking them to report all cases of fever, and to state the lowest fee forwhieh they would do so. The letter stated that thoy would not promise to report every case, and that their fee would be five shillings for each case reported.— Letter received.

,A letter was read from E. Honiss, Secretary to the Hospital, asking that crossings be made over the water tables in front of $he Old Men's Refuge and the Hospital; to make the approaches more practicable ; ;«nd rominding the Council that a atone crossing had formerly been across the road, but had been either covered „ up" or removed. —Keferred to Works Committee with power to act. j John Bice wrote asking that the water be laid ott to bis residence, Edwards street, Block 27.—The Turncock said the only way to supply Messrs Healdj ~Wai>, dell, and Bice would be to lay down a two-inch pipe, the cost of which would be £30.—JUferrei to Works Committee.

The Premier wrote that the suggestions of the Borough in the matter of the Heflth^ Act would be borne in mind if it was found advisable to amend it.

The Secretary of the Harbour Board -wrote that a vacancy had occurred, the Council's representative having failed to attend four consecutive meetings.—-Cr Marshall was elected to the vacant seat.

Cr McGowan drew the Council's attention to a petition about to be forwarded ta th« House of Eepresentatives, praying for. the reduction of charges, and removal of certain restrictions on blasting^ powder* tie requested the Council to sign it.-— Tlliß matter waa deferred for a forimgUfc.

A request from W. Atkinson that th« Council improve the footpath in front oi his residence, in Pollen street, was referred to Works Committee, with power to act. _ A similar request was read from a number of residents of the Old Caledonian Hill, and was also referred to the Works Committee, with power to deal with the matter. , .
