, Thb following are passages from Ist Corinthians xv., as they appear in the revised edition :—(16) For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised : (]#)' »nd if "Christ hath riot been raised, your faith is "vain } ye are kept in your sins. (18) Then they also whioh are felien asleep in Christ hare perished. ... (29) Else what shall they, do which are baptised for the dead ? (42) So also is the reeurreptjon of the dead. (43) It is sown in corruption j it is raised in corruption; itissown in dishonor; it is raised in glory; it it sown in weakness; it is raised in power; (44) it is sowb a natural body ; it is raised a spiri ual body. (51) Behojd, I tell yon ft layaterys We shall not u.ll sleep, but we
shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump ; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we Bhall b>i changed. (53) For this corruptible must put on incorruptible, and this mortal mußt'put on immortality.
The new clauses which Mr Johnston is to move to be added to the Corrupt Practices Bill, and which are copied from the Bill now being eteered through the English House of Commons by ir W. Harcourt, are quit;* appalling in their stringency ; indeed, so very wide is the definition ot "corrupt pract ces," so elaborate the means for bringing offenders to justice, and f o severe the penalties that an experienced politician assured mo, only t >■ day, that if they were in force at the present time, fully halt the members of our Lower House would be liable to sentences of two years' imprisonment with hard labour, and fines of five hundred pounds superaddtd. I do not think there is the slightest prospect of these vigorous provisions being passed or even being seriousl pressed. The heavy fines and hard labour sentences are scattered about too freely. The slightest infringement on any clause subjects a man to disfranchisement for 5 or 10 years, incapacitation for being elected or appointed to any public office. Most likely these clauses, if the Q-overnment really carry out, theii intention of grafting them on their Bill, will undergo material alteration in committee, otherwise it will hardly be safe for anybo.iy to vote or even to be registered, much less to be a candidate for election. — Herald.
