The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1881.

Mb Whyte, M.H.E. for Waikato, telegraphs to his constituents that he is doing his best to hare a sum placed upon the Estimates for the Cambridge railway, and he has reason to hope with success. When will this constituency receive a similar communication with reference to the Thames and Waikato .Railway? We suggest to His Worship the Mayor to wire both Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehab, requesting them to give their undivided attention to this matter, which is of more consequence to the community than Dr Pollen's pension, or the correctness or otherwise of the law officers opinions. If our present members wish for re-election, it is time they bestirred themselves, and even at this, the eleventh hour, showed some concern for the requirements of their constituents. We also think the local authorities are not stirring themselves sufficiently in directing the attention of our representatives to subjects of interest to the district. There is little use; in accepting' as a foregone conclusion that we will get nothing from the present Cabinet—at least ask for our requirements and give the Premier a chance to refuse. We have pointed out our views in a late article, and suggested a joint meeting of the members of the County and Borough Councils, when all the matters requiring attention could be discussed, a memorial drawn up and sent to^ the Government, and to our representatives in the House. In the matter of the railway a circular setting forth the advantages the. completion of the line would be to this and the adjoining districts, should be drafted and posted to each member*" of the House. The advantage to the estate of the Crown would be considerable, for a very large area of waste lands would be benefited by the construction of a line from the Thames to Waikato. We trust the matter will yet be taken up by the local authorities.
