RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M.) FAILING- TO SUI'POHT. James Simpson, on remand, was charged with failing to support his wife and children.
Defendant did not appear. Mr Mason said he had written to defendant, and had delivered the letters to him himself. Defendant informed him that since the receipt of the summons, he had received £2 16s for wages, but had not sent any of this amount to his wife. He said he was in debt, and that he would pay off his debts before he would support his wife. Until within the last three months he had been paying £1 per week for board and lodging. When asked why he did not go to the Kawakawa coal miues, he replied that it would be infra dig. for him to go there as a laborer, but tli»t he would write to the manager for work in case an order ; was made. He seemed to care very little for the condition of his wife and children.
His Worship said that it appeared to him the defendant was one of a numerous class of men who thought that they need not put themselves out to aid their wives and families so long as they could support themselves. He thought the evidence siiowed that defendant was able to help his wife, and made an order for the payment of los per week and costs, 7s. CHIMNEY QN FIHE. James Murphy was charged with this offence, and pleaded guilty. He said the chimney had been cleaned out about six weeks ago.
His Worship inflicted a penalty of Is and costs, 2s. Court adjourned.
