AUCKLAND.
This day,
Mr G. T. Chapman, stationer and publisher, and an old colonist who started the first mechanics' institute in Dunedin, died to-day.
In the case of Johnston v. Smith, damages for a kick sustained by Johnston's boy through defendant's racehorse exercising in Albert Park under permit from the City Council, Judge Macdonald held that the Council had no power to give such a permit, therefore, Smith was acting illegally.
