We have great pleasure in acknowledging the receipt from the Registrar, Mr W. E. Barnard, of a copy of the last annual report of the Ballarat school of mines. A great deal of information is contained in the little volume of seventy pages, and we Bhall;be.happy to place it, at the disposal of any one taking an interest in the institution. The list of lecture subjects is a long one, including mathematics, mining and land surveying, mechanics, natural philosophy, principles and practice of mining; mechanical engineering, mineralogy, metallurgy and assaying, chemistry, telegraphy, materia medica and physiology, botany and electricity. When i.will'ithe promise of a former Government to .establish a School of Mines on the Thames be fulfilled ? From the balance sheet we find that the Victorian Government gate a grant of £2000, and public subscriptions to the amount of £150 were received during the year towards the maintenance of the institution. Each lecturer furnishes a report upon his labours during the year,) and the result of the annual examinations; allfof whfeh is published in the volume before us. Plans are given of the Museum, and other accompanying many of the papers published.
