OUR MINES.

KURANUI HILL.

The mine manager's report is as fol lows:—"I have the honor to report as follows, on the possibility or otherwise of working our ground by puddling, or any other and more economical system than by stoping, as at present:—Eleven years ago I furnished drawings and details, and recommended a scheme for working, in an open face, the whole width of the channel ot ground containing the gold-carrying veins in the Long Drive ,wive. To use oyliuders, cast-irou puddlers, and stampera. The plaut to b« built ou the

foreshore, receiving the crushing material through a tunnel from any other claims eastward of our own. It is now abundantly clear that such plant and system as proposed would have saved a great deal in gold, in time and in money. But now that we have only the gleanings to deal with, I am of opinion that, we are not warranted in making the necessary costly alteration* in our machinery for any such purpose, so far as our own requirements are concerned, and I may here add that our reduction plant should have been situated seaward of the road, and at an elevation of at least 10 feel above highwater wark, in order to match the process proposed. That there is a considerable quantity of low grade material on the westward end of the Long Drive and Poverty sections I am quite aware, but the machinery already on the ground will answer well enough, and I have arrangements so far advanoed to deal with it next spring. Since my last week's report I am unable to report any material change in the mine. The surface works continue to give a tew picked stones, and fair crushing dirt. The three prospecting works are still being carried on with four men in each, but I regret to say that in neither have I yet got anything payable. The company's surface quartz will be all crushed by Thursday, but tributers parcels and public crushing will occupy some ten days more.—J. W. i Walker.

HOPEFUL.

The manager reports as follows :—I have driven a few feet on the cross lode since my previous report, without any change. The past few days I have been making preparations for sinking a winze from No. 2 level. I have the ground cut and the timbers in, and by Tuesday the windlass will be fixed ready to commence sinking. From the No. 1 leader I have obtained sLbs of good picked stone during the past week, making 531bs on hand.— E. Howse.
