Water Supply.
The special meeting called at the County Council offices yesterday to discuss the Water Supply question, was not attended by the members of the Borough Council, but the following letter was read from the town clerk :—" A. Brodie, Esq., County Chairman. Sir,—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication dated the 15th current, which arrived at these offices on the 17th, one day after the regular meeting of this Council, and am instructed to inform you that the matter of Borough supplementary supply is already decided and fixed by the Thames Water Supply Transfer Act of 1880, and no conference of local bodies is necessary on such matters. If the County Council have the plan referred to in my former communication to you, ready for the inspection of the members of this Council, the Borough Water Supply Committee will be most happy, as intimated in my letter of the 11th of this month, to meet* any members of your Council and yourself to decide if the proposed works are such as. this Council can agree to, this being the only matter to be discussed.—F. C. Dean." The following resolutions were adoptod : —" That the valves governing the connection of the Borough mains with the County 20 inch mains be at once closed, | and only raised in cases of fire." " That notice be sent to the Borough Council that the County Council is prepared to furnish the supplementary supply in pursuance of the provisions of the Thames Water Supply Transfer Act, 1880.". " That this Council regrets the discourteous tone of the letter receired from the Town Clerk to-day, and the absence of members of the Borough from the proposed conference, and of which the said Council should be informed and also assured that in proposing a conference the Council was actuated by a desire to assist the Borough Council, and arrange a settlement of the water supply question." Mr Thorburn moved the following as an amendment upon the last resolution, but it was not accepted, " That the Chair* man and two members meet the Water Supply Committee of the Borough." The Chairman, Crs Carpenter and Bagnall were appointed to carry out the foregoing resolutions.
