Complimentary Supper.

A supper was given to Mr J. A. Pkilp at the Provincial Hotel last evening. There were be twee* thirty and forty gentlemen present. The viands were of the choicest and most recherche description. Mr J. C. Williams occupied the Chair, and Mr C. Gordon the Yicechair. After the solids had been done full justice to, the Chairman proposed the usual loyal and patriotic toasts, which were received with musical honors. The Chairman then proposed the toast of the eveoing, " The health of. Mr Philp." He referred to Mr Philp's long residence on the Thames, and his lengthy and honorable service as a journalist on the staffof the Stab. He felt sure that all present would join with him in wishing Mr Philp Crod-speed and success wherever he went. Drunk with musical honors. Mr Philp responded in feeling terms. The Thames, he said was at preseDt suffering a relapse, but he hoped that the next time he had occasion to visit the district that prosperity would abound. He thanked them j for the kind manner the toast had been drunk. " The Mining and Commercial Interests " was then proposed and duly responded to by Messrs J£. Walker, W. Walker, and J. W. Cook. Mr Gibbons proposed "The Host and Hostess," which was received with three times three, and the Chairman, after responding, proposed " The Press, coupled with the name of Mr Gibbons."—The latter acknowledged the compliment, and " Auld Lang Syne " brought the proceedings to a close. During the course of the evening, several excellent songs were given by Messrs j Gordon, Cook, and others. The affair j altogether was most enjoyable. i
