THE RESPONSE OF EARTH TO ■ \> . i 1 'HEAVEN; ■ ■ ■■■'!!• . " The-Chantry. Owl and other Verws." " Glory to God on high !" Peul'd in the starry sky ; In .softer accents tbeu, While' (jleain'd tbe eternal fires, , Sang the angelic choirs, 1 ' " Peace and goodwill to men !*' ' ' And this the answer given ■ . By the: dark Earth tot Heaven, "To arms! to arms! to arms!" Nor was it long deferr'd, j . , ; And still each morn are heard The trumpet's shrill alarms. , And to a merry tune, , . r . Ac in a gay saloon, > Men lightly step to death ; ■. Some bound o'er yawning wares, Some march to (?r«ssy graves, And sing with their last breath. But whenrthe cannon booms,' 1"?. ■ ■ The ravens'shake their plum>l, The ghoul-like vultures scream; : And soon the crashing bones, ' l "■ And mortal'shrieks and groans ' Dispel the soldier's dream. " Glory to Grod on high!" Resounds the starry sky, ■ " Peace on the earth! " but when ? Not till the world grows, wise/ And all tbe people rise, And say Amen.! Amen!
