OUR MINES.
Mining Review of the Week.
Waihi has had unusual attention called to it during the week from the fact that that stuff said to be worth 20ozs to the ton has been taken from the upper workings of the Martha. Now, 20ozs to the ton is a high average, and we would be inclined to take the statement of our correspondent with caution 'were he not backed up by numbers of totally disinterested parties. The gold is there right enough—in sufficient quantities, we trust, to beneficially effect the whole district.
Mining news here has been scarce. Everything is stale, fiat, and unprofitable. Perhaps the principal event of the week is the retorting for the Old Golden Calf, which produced a yield equivalent to an ounce per load. Ihe reef in this mine is reported to have much improved of late.
