The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last erening. Present —Mis Worship the Mayor, Cra Meonie, Veale, Osborne, and McGowan. APOLOGUES. CrOsbdrne apologised for the absence of Crs Marshall add Wilson. THAT DBAINI A. letter was read from Dr Payne draw* ing .attention to the ease of malignant ferer in Mr Smith's family, Pollen street, which he ascribed in some measure to the drain that rum adjacent. His reason for stating so, was that the ease assumed a low form of typhoid fcrer, just such as would be contmcted by the effluvia from a drain. During the time of the child's sickness there existed a peculiar bad ■ stench from the drain* which also ran in front of his (the writer's) house, and to which he had frequently referred in his private capacity. He moved thai the work be proceeded with at once. -■■■.., Cr VeaW seconded. It was a; Very important Work, and should hare been done long ago. Cr McGowan said that the matter irks not yet formerly before the Council. He raored the receipt of the letter. Cr Mennie seconded. . : After some discussion, the matter was left to be dealt with later 00. On receipt of a letter from the Colonial Secretary, it was resolved to instruct the Town Clerk to take the .necessary steps to bring the new By-law anent water charges into force. DAVEYBTBEET. I' Mr L. Melhose wrote drawing attention to the disgraceful state of Darey street,' which no doubt greatly added to the illness now prevailing in the Borough. ■ : Cr Osborne said that the' inhabitants of this street bad just reason to complain. He moved that the matter stand brer till the reading of the Works Committee's Beport. Ie was subsequently agreed to proceed with the work as soon as the owners of allotments whose fences encroached on the road way removed the the same. ; v -':-; :'-; • -■'' ;--'- *'- MR BTBPHKN3ON'S (JHIETA.NOI?. A letter was read from Mr 4. Stephenson; renewing his application for a refund of his publican's license money. He bad written to the Minister of Justice, and the Hon. Mr Dick, replying for that gentleman, gare it as his opiuion that application shoald be made to the Borough Council, the Department of Justice baring nothing to do with the matterj. He showed the- injustice' he was suffering. Cr Mennie said it seemed to him an iniquitous thing that a saan should be deprived of hit money, and should like* wise be debarred from following his calling. Cr Osborne mored that the Borough Council, haring nothing to do with the withholding of the privilege for which he had paid, cannot refund the money. WATER BUFPLT; DIBENTUBEB. A letter was received from the New Zealand Loan and' Mercantile Company with reference to the Borough's refusal to gife their own debentures in place 6f the old Water Supply, Committee. The agent for that company did not think the Town Clerk's reason for the Borough's declining sufficient. The matter - was left in the hands of the Borough solicitor. APPLICATION. Afason was appointed officer under the above act at a remuneration of 10 per cent., and it was resolred to call for tenders for a supply of dog oollar.s. BATE.. The following is the report :— T^e Committee, in accordance with the, resolution of the Council, have ▼wlle»J furious out districts in the Borough, and make the following recommendations respecting works .to be done:—That the Footway in Queen street in front of the Catholic Church be improTed by a few load* of sand being spread on it. That the wooden water table in Queen slreet- be formed from its present termination, at the J new blacksmith's shop, to the corner of j Abraham street, and the footpath made ftp as asked for by Mr Buttle, and that the necessary plan and specification be drawn up to carry out this work under Bye-law No 7. That the present uneven stone crowing at junction of Queen and Abraham streets be lifted, and an asphalt eros-ing laid down. That the foot path in.front of the Governor Bowen Hotel in Folien street be improved by tKe spreading of a few load* of land. That the present stone dish for carrying the storm.water, from the hills on the south side of the Moanatairi road be lifted, and a wooden box culvert laid down. This will enable the road to be made a more easy grade at this part, and assist the cart traffic, that the unnecessary rise in this road near the Caledonian mullock tip be cut (Sown, and the entire length of the road metalled. That the Mining Inspector be requested to cause the Caledonian Gold Mining Company to remove so much of I heir mullock tip as encroaches on the road, and to erect their retaining wall as per agree* ment entered into by them during the time Colonel Fraser was Warden. That the Waiotahi road from Pollen' street to top of the Waiotahi spar be reformed and metalled. That 100 loads of gravel be laid oh the *oad between the' Tararu slaughter house 'and Tararu cemetery. That the footway on the west side of Golden Crown street be raised to its permanent level, and the water table laid; that plan and speciScations be prepared for doing this work under bye-law 7. That the footpath between Williamson street and Coromandel street,on the Beach road; that in front of the Knrunui in the Tararu road, and those up Shellback Creek and Tararu Creek be made with ashes or sand. That Beach road - footway r between Cochrane street and the Kanaka Creek be put in repair. That Cochrane street, from Brown to Davy street, be formed ana metalled. That Davy street, between Albert and Amy street*, be formed, and the footpaths made at soon as fences, now project* ing over the -treet, are removed by the owners. That a footpath, with wooden kerbiog, be made in Upper Albert street; past the first three houtes. That the Karaka Creek road, from Bull's battery to Bella street, be made up to its permanent level, and the water tables formed. That the Karaka road, from about the site of the old powder magazine to the Borough boundary, be coated wijth metal at the joint expense of the Borough and County Councils, and for this purpose it U recommended that a letter be sent to the County Council asking, them to join the Borough in having this work done; the quantity, of work required is about 300 yards,. That the wooden kerbing in front of the English Church, M»ck*y street, be repaired. The Comniitta>* Have to report that they hare made an arrangement to hy down a water table «fer« the east side of Bella street and the south sideof Pahau street, to carry the largest portion' f the watsr raised and used by the Queen of Beauty pump*, and that the Company are to contribute £70 towards the cost. This water table will also carry the surface drainage of the bills east of Bella street, and alt! ou h the cost will be heavy (£225) it will remove to Ih« sea a considerable quantity of water that hitherto have accumulated in pools about this part of the Borough. The drains in the various wards have been cleaned out several times during the past month. The annual statement, required by the 109ih section of the; Municipal .Corporation . Act, showing- the ■ works proposed to be done, and the monies available for such purposes, are submitted for approval by the Council.—Wm. Wilkiksok, Chairman. , WATBB BUPPIT. The Committee ■■ reported against the extension of the service to Messrs Hopkins and Ferry's residences. They recommended the extension of a sub>main up Walter street.—Adopted. THE DBDCCTION FBOM SUBSIDY. Mr MeGowan moved, " That Mr Speight, M.H.K., be requested to interview the Premier in reference to the deductions made from the Borough subsidies on account of charitable aid." tJr Osborne seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. TABABU BOAB. Cr MeGowan moved, "That Mr Speight be also requested to interview the Premier regarding the grant of £500 promised to the Council for the Tararu road by the ex* Native Minister;" Seconded by Cr Osborne, and agreed to. - ■■, •■■■ ■; ■■■ ■■■■ • ■■■ ■; --.;■ •;- -.-■;. -■ y . THE-CbtHW'a BBVBNGE. - Cr MoGowra said with reference to the report concerning water race matters published in the Star that he noticed the County Council were about to draw a hard and fast line in regard to the supply Of Water from the big race to the Borough. The County wore guilty of several misderaeanottrs within the Borough, and it would be well for the. Council to keep those facts in recollection in view of approaching events Besides which, a connection at the place mentioned in the Couuty Engineer's report would result in the Borough water race feeding the County supply, and not the County aiding the Borough. HEALTH OFFICES. This officer reported six deaAffWihe Borough during the month—three of which were from scarlatina. It was resolved to write to the Government with reference to the alteration of the law concerning the reporting of eases of infectious disease, and the report was adopted. This was all the tmsiness.
