I A Submarine Sruptioa. <At ten o'clock yesterday morning Hedley, Gorernment, surveyor, observed from tbe steamer Glanelg.a remarkable eruption between the Slipper and Mayor Islands, situated at tbe northern end of the Bay of Plenty. The water rose /uddenly to a hejpht of four feet, and spread over acisvleof sixty feet,; throwing up* % and, shells,* stones and mud. The steamer was only about twenty yards outside the circle. The water kept boil ing for some time. * > Scarlet f^ver of a mild type "is very prevalent ii the city. It is believed to have spread by tbe negligeuce of parents in sending children from infected families to school.
Bennett, a half-caste, got his knee cap completely smashed by falling from a bridge at Mercury Bay. - A* large number of cases were again adjotfrned at the Besident Magistrate's Court in consequence of the absence of the Magistrate at Wellington. It is causing great inconvenience and loss.
Wednesday. Messrs Batkin and Seed are said to have reported in favour of £10,000 reductions in the judicial department, chiefly by making J.P.s doß.M.'a work.
