Additional census returns bring up the population of the province to 104,000 Europeans, being an increase of twentyone thousand since last census. The Maori population is thirty-five thousand and the total for the. province 135,000. The population of the city and suburbs is forty thousand.
There is no clue to the burglars who stole £40 from tbe Observer office. The existence of a gang of professional housebreakers is suspected.
