Prize Shooting at the New Range.

The new .rifle range for the volunteers was opened this morning at 9.30 sham by MM Major Murray. The, rifto 8 ?e fired was fitted in an artificial rest at 400 yds, and laid/true on the target by District marker Potts. Punctually at the time appointed, the trigger was pulled and the bull's eye disc went tip amind three ringing cheers. Captain Small called for. three cheers Jor Mrs Murray, who so kindly, .consented to -open the range, and who had given the six special prizes, three to the highest scorers among the rmtg in the opening match, and three to" the highest scorers amongst, the carbines. The cheers'were cordially given. The range is situated in the Collarbone Gully, and an easy distance from any I part of; the township. -The land has been set apart by Government, with the consent of the native owners, and we hare no doubt from its conve nience will tend still further to improve' our volunteers in the practical use of their weapons. The range has been very well lftid off by the contractor, Mr Potts. Some few -improvements will yet have to be carried out, and when all is finished, it will be one of the best ranges the district has had. There was a large number of volunteers on the ground as; well as the general public. Amongst those present, we observed the Rev. V. Lush, Missliusti/ Mrs Murray, Major Murray, Captain Small, Captain Wiidman, Mr Symington, and others. As soon as the range was declared open, the first match was commenced by the competitors being told off for their respective targets. The first volunteer to.fire was Vol.,,Simpson who made a bull's eye, followed by Vol. Long on the other target with the same. The firing is carried but according to Wimbledon rules—bull's eye 5, magpie 4, inner 3, outer 2; The following are the top scores in the morning squad : — .
