This day.
A public meeting .was held last night to diaeass.tbe best means of recognising the services of J. H. Sbaw, wbo bad instituted and prosecuted tbe recent enquiry into the management of tbe Wellington Asylum; tbe Mayor in tbe chair. The following resolutions were cavried .—W. H. Lerin, M.H.R., propose, and W. Stevewrigbt seconded—That the cordia^ thanks of the colonists of New Zealand is due to J. W. Shaw, barrister, for bis conduct in connection with tbe recent enquhy into tbe management of tbe Mount View. Lunatic Asylum at Wellington, and for the important and Taluable services rendered by him in the public interest; also such otber persons as hare in any special manner aided Mr Shaw in the prosecution of the enquiry, and that' the services so rendered ought to be recognised in a tangible form. A com* mittee was formed for,the purpose of collecting subscriptions throughout tbe colony and to applying monies received—(l) to the extent of 75 per cent in making to Mr Sbaw a presentation of plate or other suitable gift and (2) to the extent of 25 per cent iv making presentation to such other persons as in the opinion of the committee hare aided Mr Shaw.
