Mining Review of the Week.

Again have oar mine owners had occa-

sion to grumbie in consequence of the scarcity of water, and again many of our batteries have had to remain idle. Many bitterly blame the County Council for

permitting the Queen of Beauty pump to be worked from the race, as, were it not for the great strain placed on the resources of the race by the pump, there would be ample supply of water for the batteries. It is not a fair way of looking at the matter, howeyer, as the Queen of Beauty is entitled to the greatest consideration, inasmuch as it is the only mine just now likely to do any prospecting at the deep" levels. Several parties are beginning to recognise that the water cannot be depended on, and are thinking of overhauling their steam engines to have them as a stand-by. Encouraging accounts continue to come in from the out-districts. The claim holders of the Waihi are exuberant oyer the fact that the prospectors hare got gold in the bottom level, and are talking of having a battery at once. Te Aroha people are far more hopeful, and though no results hare yet come to hand from the battery, we are confidently told that they will soon. From Tapu we hear that Buckland's Jbattery has been re-started;* and there is said to be a larg6 quantity of stuff ready to crush. V; o^ r_;
