CHRISTCHURCH.
This day. An inquest on the body of .Rice Foulkes was held yesterday and a verdict of suicide whilst in a stats of temporary insanity was returned. The foreman of the jury thought the police should have obtained evidence as to Foulkes' financial position, as someone might possibly have robbed him. He was known, however, to be in financial difficulties, and from the position in which the body was found, there can be no doubt of it being suicide. The Drainage Board, by five to three, yesterday refused to cancel their engineer, Napier Bell's engagement. Mr Bell is also secretary to the Harbor Board, and there is some dissatisfaction at his holding both positions, though no objection was made at the time, and by an arrangement with the Drainage Board his salary was reduced, at the same time he holds an agreement with the Drainage Board for five years.
Monday. A manufactory for potato starch, 1 arinaceo'is food, arrowroot, and similar products, is being commenced here on a large scale.
