GISBORNE.

This day.

Our Volunteers in Gisborno

The alleged libel on the J. Buttery corps of Volunteers by the Poverty Bay Herald is causing much discussion here. The Herald stated that at the recent encampment the camp was mutinous, drunken, and debauched; the officers incompetent, and the whole force demoralised ; the boy Cadets doing duty for the men, who passed away their time in the canteen. At a meeting of the corps, resolutions expressing indignation at the Herald's remarks were passed, and a challenge to the writer to substantiate the statements or a full and ample apology would be demanded.
