GREYMOUTH.

This day

A fatal accident occurred near the racecourse. John Harris, a carrier from Westport, was taking his waggon full of men, women, and children over an old culvert, when just as the horse got across the culvert gave way, dragging him back, and falling upon the driver, at the same time precipitating the waggonful of people into the creek. All the children and adults got out uninjured, and after some difficulty, the driver was found under the horse, but all efforts to restore animation failed.

The Murder Case. Further particulars bare been receired of the murder case at Larry's Creek. The skull of the deceased was so battered as to expose the.brain, and splinters from the stock of the gun show the force of the blow. McGabey, it is thought, fired first at Bell and missed him, and then struck him with the stock. McGahey has been, married 14 years, without hay-

ing any cause to doubt his wife's fidelity, but about two years ago it was rumoured that she attempted -to? poison him, but nothing came of the report. Subsequently she accused him of violating an adopted child, a girl, but the medical examination showed the allegation to be unfounded. Mrs McGahey soon after this began complaining of the hardship of her married life and the cruelty she was enduring. Some of her sympathisers .procured her respectable situations, but these she threw up, and placed herself under the protection of Bell (the deceased). -The inquest was adjourned without taking j any evidence.
