Auckland Races.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, Monday. The Auckland A.utumn Meeting was well attended, notwithstanding the drizzling rain. There was but little betting, although the totalisator was freely patronised: The following were the events :— Tradesmen's Plate Handicap, of 5U soys.; distance, 1 mile. Smith's Maid of Honour, Bst 21bs ... 1 lennard's Ratcatcher, 7st 2lbs 2 McDonald's Paramena, 7st 71bs 3 Dan, Lone Hand, and Miss Domett were scratched. Betting : 6 to 4 on Maid of Honour and Paramena. After a good deal of coquetting at the post, the horses were despatched to an excellent start. On going round the bend of the course, Paramena ran into first place, hotly pursued by Ratcatcher, while Maid of Honour led the rest, which followed in a ruck. At the back of the course Wilmot called on his mare, and, in response, she went up on the quarters of the leaders, and raced them. At the three-quarter mile post she was on even terms with them. On turning into the cutting Paramena led, but it was easily perceived his retention of the position was only temporary. In commencing the run home he stumbled.

Ellebslie Handicap of 100 soys., with a sweepstake of 3 soys. each, amount accruing from sweeepstakes to go to second horse. For 2 and 3-yfear-olds. Distance, |- mile.

H. Owen's eh! Sir George, Bst lOlbs ... 1 J. Lennard'a eh c Kenilworth, 7st 81bs ... 2 Major F. N. George's br f Tiuainbra, 6st 3

Tim Whiffier, Miss Domett, Rosalina and Slanderer, filly, also started. Rifleman was scratched.

Betting: 6 to 4 on Sir George. The start to-day was a bad one Sir George securing the full advantage of it, and Kenilworth and Tinambra also participating to some extent in this accidental good fortune.

The interest of the race centred in the contest between these two animals for second honors, for it was easily seen that the leader was hot likely to be displaced. Kenilworth and Tinambra ran neck and neck from the start till the turn for home, when Holmes allowed them to get on terms whith him.* At this place Rosalina fell, but her rider, though thrown over her head, escaped unhurst. Sir George won in a canter. Slanderer (filly) made a good forth. Time - lmin 20£-Becs. Hubdle Ea.ce Handicap, of 50 soys ; distance, 2% miles, over 9 flights of hurdles. DougW Harkawoy, lOsfc 81bs ... ... 1 Ellis' Lonehapd, 12 B t71bs 2 Wheeler's Morning Star, lOst ... ... 3 Whakahahi did not show up at the post. After the first few score yards had been traversed, Morning Star came away with and led the field over the first hurdle; Whitefoot, Lonehand and Harkaway being in close attendance. The second hurdle was safely negotiated without any change of relative positions, and the third was also taken in the same order, although sustaining severe damage from the hoofs of some of the racers. In approaching the stand, Whitefoot dropped behind, and then the leaders drew closer together. At the course Lonehand began to go up upon Harkaway, w'ach from the stand had got first place, while both of them began to make the pace hot for Morning Star. A neck and neck race ensued, and then as the straight was entered upon the three were together. Morning Star yielded up his position, and Harkaway and Lonehand then raced grandly for it, the former winning by a head, Morning Star being only a length behind.—Time, 4mins. 40secs.

Easter Handicap,-of 100 soys ; distance, 2 miles. S. Horßfall's King Quail, 7st 51bs ... 1 A. McDonald's Foul Play, 9st 51bs ... 2 W. Betting: Level money on Sir George, 6 to 4 against Foul Play, 3 to 1 against Ariel, 6 to 1 against King (c^uail, 10 to 1 against the others. This was from tiie start to the finish a splendid race, and every one of the starters were well in it. Dan obtained the benefit of a start with Ariel, and Foul Play was in close position, but changed several times, and when the grand stand was passed for the first time, six horses were close together, and at the back of the course it was the same then. Sir George then put on a spurt, and looked a likely enemy, but King Quail soon deposed him and took the lead, whence he was raced up the straight by Eawenwata and Foul Play, and finished fourth; Sir George being fifth Dan threw his rider, but no injury was sustained.
