CHRISTCHURCH.

This day.

There are now six large ships in Lyttelton flying the New Zealand Shipping Company's flag, of an aggregate capacity of 10,000 tons. The block of grain, it is expected, will be speedily swept away. : .A man named G-eorge Saddler, arriving from England with a letter of credit for £50, found on arrival that a duplicate which came by the mail has been cashed by another George Sadler. The culprit, who is a laboring man, and who could neither read nor write, said he thought it came from his mother in Grloucestershire. He was committed for trial.

The racehorse Le -Loup, recently purchased by James Shand, will not race again, but will go to stud. •An adjourned meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Olub was held last night to consider the matters with reference to ;the scratching of Natator for the Forbury Handicap, and after discussion, a motion f thai the horse, JSTatator, and Mr Lance be flisqualified w#s lost, and the following -motion carried. Having received a letter from Hon. W. Bobinson with regard to 'the scratching of Natator for Forbury Handicap on 26 th February, the committee considers same highly unsatisfactory, and expresses a. strong disapproval of the course pursued in allowing the horse to remain in betting nearly four hours after he had left Dunedin, and for a long time after he (Mr Lance) had decided to send the horse away.
