RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M.)
LARCENY.
Henry Clifford, alias Crossley, and W. Thompson, i ias Baldwin, were charged with stealing one box of tea and one box of gin and ale, the property of Charles Curtis on the 4th December last.
Sergio Murphy applied for a remand, as some of the witnesses had not returned from the Supreme Court
Ciiffoi'd, on^ of the defendants, a sad faced, shabby genteel young man, said it was veiy hard on him, he having been ia custody since the 29th of March.
Sergt. Murphy said that both prisoners had just served a term on a previous conviction, and one of them having committed a breach of the gaol regulations hr i received an extra sentence. Clifford had been arrested immediately on his release, and as soon as Thompson's sentence had expired, they were bdtb. rem; Tided to the Thames.
His Worship said he wou'd remand the case for eight days, and if the police were able to. go on with it sooner, ihey would be brought up.
Clifford asked if they would be kept on the Thames during the remand, as there was no accoinmodatio i in the lock up.
His Worship said he could not understand how they had been kept so long, but he supposed there was a good reason for it. He would remand the defendants to the Sh .rtland gaol, and requested Sergt. Murphy to detail a constable to take charge of them. The defendants were then removed.
His Worship said with reference to the case, he might state that he had received an anonymous letter charging other persons with being implicated. He would treat the letter as it deserved to be treated —with contempt. If any one knew anything about the case, it was bis duty to come to Court.
Court adjourned
