A,t the Auiberley It. M. Court yesterday. W.-A. Beuii, auctioneer, was charged with committing a, breach-.of the Brands aud
Branding Ordinance, 1880, by selling a number of sheep not branded with his brand as required by the Act. After hearing a large amount of evidence, chiefly as to trade usage which tended to prore it was not usual for an auctioneer to brand the sheep, the bench stated that they wer* bound to carry out the law as laid down and inflicted a nominal fine of 20s. A four roomed cottage was burnt down last night, it was insured for £200 in the Standard office, and the furniture was insured in the South British. The cause was a kerosene lamp left alight in the house while the inmates went out. James Scott, lately manager of several large properties in Ashburton district, was found guilty of forgery and uttering, and pleaded guilty of embezzlement. He was sentenced to two years hard labor, the sentences to run concurrently. There were other defalcations on which no information were laid.
