SOUTHERN CROSS.
The operations of this company are at present principally confined to the surface from which most of the gold is obtained, and the 100 ft level. Driving and stoping operations are in progress, and quartz of a payable grade is coming to hand. Several of the directors are expected to arrive here to day or to«morrow in Messrs Fraser and Tinne's new steamer, the Waihou, and it is expected they will decide concerning the starting of operations at the 400 feet level. lam informed that there is a likely place near the Caledonian. The proposal on the part of the Southorn Cross to embark in deep level proapecting is plucky, as the present output of the mine barely pays its way.
