BLENHEIM.

This day. At 10.30 last night a new church in course of erection for the Wesleyans was was discovered on fire in the front part of the building and before an alarm could be given the whole place was in flames, and in less than half an hour was burnt to the ground. It is not known how the fire originated. The adjoining places were saved by the plucky exertion of a few willing hands, who stood their ground manfully amid heavy showers of sparks. The contractor, William Coleman, has a Builder's Hisk Insurance, but the amount, is not known.

The Commissioners appointed by the Government to enquire into the charges made against H. JS. Firth, Property Tax Assessor, by G.Rutland, farmer, Pelorus Sound, commenced 'sitting at Havelock yesterday. The principal charges are that on July 30,1880, he became intoxicated while documents relating to the assessment were in his possession, and that in the course of a discussion with John Wilson on the assessment of his (Wilson's) property, he made offers to take something (specifying a side of bacon) to alter the assessment if Wilson was not satisfied with it. The principal evidence taken was that of Rutland, who swore he saw Firth and Wilson at Pelorus Hotel. Firth said to Wilson that the assessment -■ of the property was fair. Wilson replied, "No fear; you are too sharp for me, Firth." Firth replied," Look here, I will make it all right; I will take a side of bacon, or anything of that sort." He said this twice distinctly. Wilson, in his evidence, said he had no recollection of Firth offering to make an alteration in the assessment for a consideration. He may have said so. He was sober. All the time Firth was doing business as assessor he appeared to be sober. Do not consider he was drunk that night. The case is creating considerable interest. Defendant's case commenced yesterday. There are fourteen witnesses to be examined. '
