THE MAYOR AND HIS STATEMENTS.

(To the Editor of the Evening- Stab.)

Sis, —Truth is the sovereign of virtues, and the mother of them all; without it all other moral qualities are useless. Au abuse of this essential principle occurs ia your contemporary's assumption that the writers " Humanitas," " Truth," and " Plain Speaker " are identical. In the name of " Truth" I deny any knowledge of, or connected with, either of those writers. The onus of proof, however, as to the charge of having deliberately made a statement opposite to facts lies with the accused. The dignity of the Mayoralty has been compromised by this and by many other undignified actions; more particularly in refereuce to the proceedings in the case of Procoffi. I am led to believe that Messrs Osborne, Dean, and Wilson are prepared to prove on oath that the Mayor has made, in his place in the Council, an untruthful statement. If no other indignity had been offered to the Council and burgesses, this is alone sufficient to disqualify the present occupant of the civic chair, or to continue in the office of Chief Magistrate. lam fully determined and prepared to disclose my name when the Mayor shows by his public conduct that his promises can be relied upon.— I am, &c, Teuth.
