Cricket.
On Saturday afternoon some of the members of the Thames Cricket Club met at Parawai for practice. Owing to the fact that the event of the practice was nofc generally known, only six members " turned up "—Messrs Lawless, Law, Nodder, GrellioD, Parsons, and Buttle. After a short time occupied in rolling the ground (which is in very bad condition at present) the wickets were pitched, and each man allowed 10 minutes practice. Mr Buttle was first to handle the willow, and showed good : defensive abilities, although playing rather short at the balls delivered by Mr Law, who managed to put one straight once in about a dozen times. Mr Law would make a fair bowler if he devoted himself more to practice, but at present would not be fit to handle the leather against a visiting team. Mr Lawless, as backstop, was good, but through the ground being so lumpy, was not as successful in staying the progress of the players as usual. Mr Nodder played with discretion, showing good forward play. He was also a good field, and with practice will make a'most acceptable member of the team. Mr Law played well, and the bowling of Mr Buttle was the best noticed on Saturday, although Mr Lawless delivered some good balls. Mr G-ellion showed up well aa a left handed batsman, and several times put the leather to flight. ;Mr . Parsons, besides fumbling the ball while fielding, was totally incapable of playing Mr G-ellion's slowly delivered " unders," and would have been easily stumped first ball in a match. This afternoon a number of cricketers have gone to Parawai for practice, and to water and roll the ground. Practices will be held every afternoon this week, in order that our team will make a decent show against the Auckland United. Lohg-off.
