COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held this afternoon in the Council Chambers, Pollen street. Pres sat—The Chairman, Crs Bagnall, G-r-eenville, Coutts, Porter,Peeble, Brown, and Thorburn. '."•;<

OUTWARD COEBESPONDEKCE. Amongst the outward correspondence was a letter to tho Thames members requesting them to obtain a statement' of the expenditure of the Goldfields' vote. A letter was received from the Town Clerk asking permission to connect the nine-inch maius now being laid by, the Borough with the County liace at; the foot of the Waiotahi. The writer likewise wished to knov if the Council were disposed to sell their interest m- Ithe Waib-Karaka reservoir to the Borough.

A letter was read from Mr Nicholla of Hikutaia, reminding Mr Aitken of a promise to erect a bridge to protect the natives' crops from the depredations of the pigs, etc. A letter was received from Sir George Grey acknowledging the receipt, of,the Council's letter re the goldfield v,ote, and promising to ask for the returns required. The reply of the Government to the resolution of the Thames and JPiako Counties' Conference, which has already been published, was read. Aletter was read from Mr J.B. Whyte M.H.R., stating that the Government intended constructing the Thames-Wai-kato Railway line to Morrinsville. A letter was received from Mr Joshua Cuff on behalf of Messrs Bull, Fisher, and Perry, complaining of the Council breaking their agreement with : his clients in supplying batteries not mentioned iv the original agreement, to their (his clients') loss and inconvenience.

SUKVEYOB's BEPOftT. " / [ The following is a precis of the monthlyreport of the County Surveyor:—Regarding the Tapu-Waikawai road it is recommended that men be afc once employed to make a few necessary repairs. No work has been done on the Tapu Creek road since last,report, but two men have been engaged repairing the; Thames Tapu roadc Half •of ' the cost of the Tararu-Waikawai road—£lo—was to be borne by the homestead settlers at the latter pbce. The Waiotahi Creek, Moanatairi, Collarbone and Irishtown roads have been repaired, likewise several bridges and culverts in the Waiotahi Riding. Good progress has been made with the Karaka Creek-Lucky Hit road, and a number of claims had been taken up. The progress iof the works ia other ridings had been satisfactory, the Te Aroha road being in a forward state.

THE. FINANCIAL STATEMENT Of the Council for the past month showed the receipts to have been £998 17s sd, including £351 from the Water Race, and £U6 10s County rates, £438 Is 3d had been received from gold duty, and £50 from the sale of old .iron. . £1308 6s 2d worth of accounts had been paid. WATEE RACE. „;-■. The engineer reports that doe length of the 20 inch main in Golden Crow-n street had burst, and had to be replaced with a new one. This stopped' the batiteries for 36 hours.. The water in the race*had been low in consequence of the dry weather, there not beiug more than 15 sluiceheads .when..the water was at its lowest. In consequence of the shortness of the water, several batteries were stopped in rotation, as authorised by the Council.
