THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'OLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY MARCH 1, 1881.
There appears to be a great deal too much of a personal and acrimonious feeling introduced into the investigation of the murder case at the Police Court. This morning the Bench, the bar, and the police had a sort of a free fight, each giving as much as possible, and in turn getting a share of the abuse. The Bench may be quite justified in making remarks upon the procedure, but the police witness very far forgot himself when he reflected upon the professional ability of the solicitor for the accused. We cannot, however, think the Bench quite wise in refusing simple requests of the solicitor, nor can we, at the .evident want of unanimity of opinion, believe the Justices hearing the, case. All these little ebulitions of feeling display a want of common sense, and to spectators the effect is anything but pleasing. If the solicitor for the accused exceeds due limits he may be forgiven for an error of judgment, but at least all will accord him praise for his intentions, and when defending a man accused of such a serious crime, very little fault should be found with the mode of procedure. In fact, temper or feeling shown by either the police or the Bench is calculated only to tell in favor of the prisoner, and to prolong the proceedings, while, as we have already said, the spectacle is neither • pleasing to the public nor tending to increase respect for the administration of justice by our local Bench.
