The Boat Race.
Through an erroneous telegra% from Auckland in our issue of yesterday the facts in connection with the above race; were sadly mis-stated. A start was effected at about half-past ten, but it was most.unsatisfactory. The Auckland boat, started in smooth water, the Mercury, Bay was next, and the Thames boat was i out in the rough water. After starting ! the Thames boat lost considerably in j gaining the smooth water. The position at this time, was—Auckland Ist, Mercury Bay 2nd, Thames 3rd. This was the' position of the boats at the time the'
Mercury Bay boat filled. The Thames boat was half full of water from the start, but, nevertheless, the Thames men, nothing daunted, strained every nerve to get first place, but the Auckland men, having the advantage of a dry boat, won easily. There is little doubt that even had the Mercury Bay boat not been swamped the relative positions of the boats would not have been changed, and had the Thames boat been dry the prize would probably have fallen to our local crew. These particulars have been kindly supplied us by a gentleman who was on board the steamer which accompanied the race.
