Wednesday

Adolpho Moritson, late a clerk in the Standard Insurance Company's employ,and now connected^with tbe management of the Transatlantic, and who was arrested to-day for the embezzlement of moneys of his former company, was remanded till Friday. Bail was allowed, himself in £500 and two sureties of £250 each. He maintains his innocence.

At a meeting held to-day, convened by the Bible in Schools Association, to consider the question of the introduction of the Bible in schools, Judge Bathgate moved, " That in the 'opinion of this meeting a portion of the Bible should be read in the public schools of the Icolony, subject to a time table and conscience clause." Mr Bell moved, and the Rev J. Upton Davis seconded, " That the meet-, in? was impressed by the advantages offered by the present system of national education, and deprecates any interference with any provision which would tend to an indication of denominationalism." The Bey Mr Copeland moved a further amendment, " That the meeting, while deprecating any legislation that tends to denominationalism, is yet of opinion that a portion of the Bible should be read daily, with a time table and conscience clause." Mr Bell's amendment was carried.

The Australian Eleven arrived to-night, but did not even receive a cheer.
