Akeake and Venus.

- A race came off this afternoon between Mr Lennard's Venus and Mr McDonald's Akeake on the racecourse, Parawai. The distance run was a mile and a half, and the match was for £25 aside. The betting some time before the race was much in favor of Akeake. Just before the time appointed for the start, the opinion of turfites was in . favor of Akeake, the betting being 2 to 1 on him. At 3 o'clock precisely a capital start was effected by Mr John Townsend, Akeake having the inside running. On passing the Grand Stand for the first time Venus had a slight lead, a lead which was gradually increased np to the dose of the race, as, on passing the winning post Mr Lennard's mare must have been fully ICD yards ahead, and therefore winning the race easily.
