British position at Fotcbefotroom. From news which c?.me to hand yesterday, it appears the fighting was severe and lasted some time, but so strong was the defence offered by the British troops, that the Boers were ultimately repulsed with considerable loss.

News has been received at Natal, that Krugea, the Boer President has issued a proclamation which, while deprecating any war with the British, states that the Boers are determined to assert, their independence in the Transvaal. Later, , Cape Town, December 26. .Further telegrams to hand regarding the disaster in the Transvaal state that, when the Boers attacked the detachment of the 94th Regiment, the men were engaged in recovering a number of swamped waggons, and consequently, being without arms, were completely crushed by the large numbers of Boers who swept down on them.

News has also been received that the Boers at Fotchefotroom murdered five Englishmen who were residing in the town, and, as soon as information of the outrage reached head-quarters, a battery of artillery was dispatched, and shelled the place. The enemy were completely driven out, and over 100 were killed by the guns. London, December 27. In consequence of the necessity for reinforcements of cavalry in the Transvaal, the 6th Dragoons have been ordered to Natal. .
