HOKITIKA.

.-V, This day. Several ratepayers having petitioned the R.M. to upset the late Mayoral election through supplementary burgess roll having being prepared and used at the ejection. The case was heard and decided at the R.M. Court yesterday in favor of the petitioners, the Magistrate rnling the allegations of petitioners to

hare been sustained and declared the election to id. A fresh election nu to take place. (fBOM OVB SPECIAL COBBESPONDENT.) . , Wellington Saturday. When Mr Maginnetty, the Undersecretary of the Wire office ha&to resign, and it was known it was accepted, the lines north and south were blocked for j hours owing to the number of congratulatory messages which the operators and officials sent to each other. The next " Fogy," which must be squeezed out is Lemon, and if the commissioner does not give him his conge aacTallow him compensation he is sure to get the run immediately another Government gets into power. Mr Maginnety has now left, so I had better, let him rest also, but I cannot help remarking how correct my news proved in his case, and I regret to state that he owes his downfall to his own injudicious conduct. Had he to go through his last two years of office again under the same circumstances, I predict that he would have been more discreet and that he would confine himself to simply answering questions without even offering any suggestion. THE UNDEB BECBETABY OF THE NATIVE OFFICE. Mr L. W. Lewis, the Under-Secretary of the Native Department, and who is generally known as the chief of a sect in Wellington nicknamed " the Cock Angels," i» endeavoring to retire on his pension. The matter may be arranged, and no doubt Mr Lewis sees good grounds for preparing for retiring from the present position which he occupies. Like Mr Maginnity, he has a number of real well-wishers, who will be sure to look after his " welfare " should an opportunity arrive, and that at present is on the cards. . MB BATKIN, MB CHURTON, AND MB J. C. YOUNG. . The result of the investigation into Mr J. C. Young's account by the Registrar of the Auckland Supreme Court is believed to be very unfavorable to the X^ipsury and Audit Departments. The result will be that Mr Young will very likely get £ICK) and tl»e lien taken off his property. I dff not know wha£4£r Brookfield, the Crown Prosecutor, thinks of the business now, especially over his special trip to Tauranga when the criminal part of the business was commenced. THE FBESSNT AND LATE NATIVE MINISTERS. ■ The general impression in official circles here goes to show that the Hon. Mr Sheehan practically guides the action of the present Native Minister in all na-, tive questions of any importance. The accurate knowledge of all native districts which Mr Sheehan possesses, as well as his personal communication with the leading chiefs on both islands during the time he was Native Minister has made him an adept in aboriginal diplomacy, and his advice and recommendations must therefore be of immense value, not only to the Hon. Mr Bryce, but to the whole of his colleagues and the Governor whSn dealing in Cabinet with many knotty native questions.
