The amounts paid and the liabilities in.' curred on account of the note of fifty thousand pounds for roads, hedges, and other public undertakings in the North Island has at last seen the light ..of day, and the figures present a somewhat strange aspect. For the counties and district of Waipa, Waikato, Piflo, Cambridge, Hamilton and other favored

places in the electorates of Messrs F. A. "Whitaker and Whyfce over twenty thousand pounds have been appropriated. The Thames and Ohinemuri districts got a few thousands, whilst the Haretanga and Mercury Bay Riditfgs squeezed out of the whole one thousand. The electorates of Waitemata, Bodney, Marsden, Holdanga and .the Bay of Islands jusfc received about two thousand five hundred pounds for the whole of the north of the provincial district. Mr Stewart's sum, for travelling" expenses in connection with the works was eighty-eight pounds, but if one could see the items for other engineers, notably Mr Fairburn, together with advertisement and sundry other details connected with the disposal of the vote I have no doubt but the central administration would come out all right, especially in their anxiety to debit the vote with a number of items which, properly speaking, should not be* charged. Looking at the abstract of distribution I cannot yet make out what the end will be for it may be ascertained that many of the contracts will necessitate another appropriation of the House before the contractors are freed from their bonds.
