This day. v A sad affair occurred at Ashburton on Sunday morning last. An elderly man named Campbell, a farmer, living near the racecourse, committed suicide by shooting himself with a fowling piece". Nothing has yet transpired at to the
cause of the rash act, but it is supposed that the deceased has latterly suffered through losses. in land, and this has preyed upon his mind.
An inquest was held to«day at Ash* burton on the body of a young man named John Hurley, a uative of Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, who met with his death while bathing in the Wakanui Greek, near Ashburlon. The verdict of " Accidentally drowned " was returned.
