AUCKLAND.

This day.

The Mayor of Auckland. J. McCosh Clark, Esq., was elected Mayor of Auckland unopposed.

Great disappointment here at the defeat of Triokett, who was the favorite in the betting. •

Mr G. M. Reed, who is still in Auckland, has not abandoned his idea of trying to form his first special settlement on the East Coast. He is proceeding to Gis* borne by Thursday's boat, and it is under* stood if he finds the laud available, he will give the preference to Poverty Bay before all other districts. The pricipal members of his party are e±pected to arrive in Auckland and Napier towards the end of December.

(from oub special corbespondbnt.)

AUCKLAND, This day.

BEETIE SETEBNA.

The coloring for the pig it is reported was applied for by the owner to Messrs Ireland Brothers in Vulcan Lane, but as the stuff was not on hand, it was got at another well • known establishment. There will however be all the fun out when the impending case against the judges for disqualifying this now famous animal comes to be investigated in one of our local courts, probably next Thursday.

ARBIVAL OF THE PBEMIEB. The Honorable J. Hall, Premier, is expected with other Ministers by the steamer Hinetuoa which is due in the Manukau this afternoon, to be in waiting to receive Sir Arthur Gordon, who is expected in Auckland about Friday at the latest. Should the weather continue fine, there will be a gala day for the new vice regal representative, as the arrival will bring with it a half holiday, and an im> mense turn out. ANOTHER ACT OF CHEE9B-PABIKG.

The Education or Native Department i has sent instructions to the managers of the Maori school at Parnell to reduce the number of scholars from forty-nine to | thirty, aad have further intimated that no boy possessing a preponderance of European blood is to be retained or in future admitted to the institution. This is red tape and economy with a vengence. It is somewhat singular when one hears of these continued and "absolute" reductions in petty matters that no mention or allusion is ever heard of any decreuse in the number of under secretaries of any of the Government departments at Wellington —a class who apparently rule the colony, and who Ministers appear very chary to meddle with. The poor inmates of the Orphan School at Parnell must now fly, and the little good which they got I from remaining there will soon be lost on them when they get to their hapus. THE LUNATIC ASYLUM. I paid a visit to the Lunatic Asylum on Saturday and found everything going on well. The new wings are nearly ready for furnishing, and Mr Halyday, the well known upholsterer of Shorthand Street, was engaged measuring the various rooms, cells, corridors, &c, with a view of an estimate for the requisites needed. Doctor Young the superintendent, gives much satisfaoion, his warders are humane and attentive, and during the last six mouths a visitor cannot fail in noticing the many little matters which have been carried out for the care and welfare of the unfortunate creatures detained. The additional ground which has been added to the establishment is a source of great help to the officers, who can now employ the more convalescent at different modes of employment.
