The Cup Race.
The second day's races of the Victorian Racing Club's Spring Meeting was held to-day at Flemington. The weather was splendid, and there was an immense concourse of spectators, estimated at o?er 103,000. The course, it is bettered, has nerer before been so crowded. The Marquis of Norman by, Sir Wm. Jerrois, and His Grace the Duke of Manchester were present. The following are the results of the chief events, the fields for which were large and the; racing good;
Maiden Plate —If miles: Orient, 1; Exeter, 2; Herman, 3. Won eatily; time, 2mins. 44secs.
Railway Stakes—ljmiles; Monarque, 1; Dongalnton, 2; Chatterer, 3. Time, 2mins. 14secs. The Cup race resulted as follows:— Grand Flaneur , ... ... 1 Progress ... . ... 2 Lord Burghley 3 Lothair ... 4 Martendale 5 Chester ' ... 6 Twenty horses started for the Cup, which was a capital race. Mata, the New Zealand horse, never showed to|the front. Progress led for some distance, when Lothair and Grand. Flaneur came up at the home time, the latter winning a splendid race by three quarters of a length from Progress. Lord Burghley, third. Lotbair, Martendale and Chester followed. Time, 3mins. 34fsecs. Napper Tandy was placed third by the judge, i but ithis was found to be an error.
' Laths. Grand Flaneur winning the Cup makes it hard on the book-makers, as he had been largely backed on doubles. Grand Flaneur has nerer been beaten yet, and his victory to-day made him very popular.
All the placed horses . were stroßg favorites, showing they were running.
Dablikg Stakes—Supple Jack and Lati*obe ran a dead heat. Six horses started. Time, 2mins. 44secs. ,
