The first day's races of the Victorian Baring Club Spring Meeting took place to-day at Flemington. The weather was fine, and.there was an immense attendance. The racing was splendid. The following are the results of the several events :— Meibocbne Stakis, H mile. —Chester 1, Respite 2, Monarqoe 3. Won by a head. Hothak Handicap, 1| miles.—Wellington 1, Prattle 2, Pontiff 3; won by a head; time, 2mins. 43secs. Camballo ran fifth.; Mabibtb»on& Plate, 5 furlongs.— Welcome Jack and Lavina ran a dead heat, Spinningdale 3. Grand race; time lmin. 5} sees. The owners of Welcome and Lavina, who ran a dead heat for the Maribyrnong Plate, divided the stakes. . THE DERBY; - Grand flaneur ... ... 1 Progress ... ... ... 2 Mulatto ... ... ... 3 The race was won by a length. It was a fine race; eleven started. The winner was a strong favourite. ; In the race for the Derby, the finish in the last half mile was entirely be* tween Grand Flaneur and Progress, and they made a grand straggle along the straight. The time was 2 mins 44sees. Maidbn Stakis, 2£ miles, Steele 1, Gippslander 2, Verdi 3. A heavy rain fell all the afternoon, although the morning was fine. ' Lee's Nellie and Cook's Adventurer, have been scratched for the Cup. Mbiboubhe, Sunday. . Betting for the Cup: Progress and Flaneur, sto 1; Mate, 7to 1. Milbotoni, Monday. THE CUP DAY. The weather is unsettled, and it is feared it may be wet to-morrow for the Cup. The conference of delegates of the Australian Colonies on the border duties and Chinese question will commence its sittings here on the 25th instant.
