The forthcoming mayoral election is causing great interest, three candidates being already announced.
Sir Dillion Bell's salary has been fixed at £1200 per annum, for which he acts as Agent-General, and agent for the inscription of stock, without commission. A Barque ashore. A telegram from Gisborne states that the iron barque Loch-nagar, which was loading there for London, parted her cable this morning, and is now high and dry on the beach. The vessel and cargo sustained no damage. At the Magistrate's Court information was heard against Dr Haddley, late of the Waimate, for an attempt to smuggle rolls of cloth ashore from the ship St. Leonard. The rolls were being brought up the wharf at a late hour last night; when the night-watchman stopped him. A fine of £25 was inflicted. Tuesday. THE NEW AGENT-GENEBAL. Sir Francis Dillon Bell was offered and has accepted the Agent-Generalship, vacated by the resignation of Sir Julins Vogel. He leaves for England almost immediately. Te Whiti has summoned Titokowaru and the Taranaki natives to Parihaka for to-morrow. The reason is unknown.
