THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1880.

We learn that the Government have refused to grant the request contained in a letter to the Premier asking for another enquiry into the management of the Thames Hospital. The general committee will no doubt look into the matter, for we understand that some very strong charges were made in the letter against the doctor "and the officials of the institution, and such should not go unchallenged. The letter stated that in the opinion of very many persons who were subscribers to the funds the internal management of the Hospital was wrong and very faulty, requiring immediate alteration. That it was found impossible to get the committee of management to make a fall and impartial or public enquiry into certain matters, such as the want of cleanliness and the proper nursing of the patients; the want of the food being more suitably prepared or cooked for the patients; the coarse language and unnecessary cruelty to patients by the doctor of the institution; and the general want of attention to their duties by the officials, and proper and efficient supervision of the Hospital stores and food under their care. The letter is- signed by Joshua Rowbottom (surgeon), F. C. Dean, J. E. Hansen, W. Wood (senr.), Charles G. Farrar (chemist), W.•■■'■'Plant' (chemist), and; F; Ji \ Cocks (upholsterer). There is no reason why the above-named gentlemen should not be asked to substantiate their statements before the Committee, especially when they make such direct charges of improper conduct on the part of the surgeon and officials. As the matter is yet to be investigated, we refrain from offering any comments.
