OHINEMURI.
(FBOK OTJE OWN CORRESPONDENTS )
Paeroa, 13th October, 1880.
Messrs Greenville and Deeble, Thames County Councillors, passed through here en route for the Hot Springs at the County expense. They will no doubt enjoy the outing, as the roads are in excellent order, but had the trip been taken three months aero it might rot hare been so enjoyable. When I saj road are good, I mean where there are-ire any, but there are some places in Uw Hiding not far from Paeroa, where tiere are no roads and where the County Engineer has recommended that a road should be con structed. The settlers certainly deserve one, as they htve made substantial and lasting improvements on their properties, but instead of assisting the settlers, the Councillors go in for assisting themselves, by voting their Chairman another hundred, a-year to his already too large salary. I woald not detract from the vaFun of Mr Bridie's services, but in face of the financial position of the County and the demand /or more roads to open the country and promote settlement, the action is an injustice to the ratepayers. The present season will pass away and we will not be connected with either,Kati Kati, Te Aroha, or Shortland by, a • carriage road, and in the immediate district of Paeroa a spring vehicle is of less use now than it was fo«r years ago, for then we could drive to the Puke, Mackaytown, and elsewhere, but not now; road obstruction is not confined to the Kbmata; we have worse than Tukukino to deal with—white men who have purchased small interests of land with the avowed intention of ■topping a line of road that was used by the public since the opening of the field.
