Visit of Mr Hislop.

Mr John Hislop, Under-Secretary for Education, is at present on a visit to the Thames in the discharge of his duties. The Government have thought fit to place under Mr Hislop's supervision all subsidised orphanages and industrial schools, and in order to make himself the better able to discharge his duties Mr Hislop intends to visit all sncb, and make himself acquainted with both the local committees of management,, the institutions themselves, and the mode of working. This morning, accompanied by Messrs Brodie and McCullough, Mr Hislop visited the High School and expressed himself highly pleased with the choice made by the Board of Governors of the situation of the buildings and teaching staff. Mr Hislop's attention was called to the want of a larger play ground for the children, and the desirability of the Government giving the Board a grant of money to purchase adjoining allotments. Mr Hislop next visited the Kauaeranga Boys' School and beard the infant school under Mrs Phillips go through some flinging exercises. .He also inspected the drawiog studies of the more advanced pupils, and tbe writing and exercise books. He expressed pleasure at the clean and orderly appearance of the children, and surprise at the large attendance. Mr Hislop was then driven to the Orphanage, Mr Dean and Mr Mason accompanying him. The Orphanage was well looked through, the clothing, bedding, and food of the children being examned. Mr Hislop made a number of enquiries from Mr Dean, and expressed himself highly gratified with the management, the appearance, and the internal arrangement of the house. He next visited the Kauaeranga Girls' and the WaioZaraka schools.
